The contemporary challenges that organised crime inflicts on local societies have been the central issue of the thematic panel \u201cTackling organized crime at the local level\u201d that was carried out in the framework  of the international conference for urban security that took place in Riga, Latvia. The Head of Anti-Crime Policy Sector of the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA) Police Major Vasileios Roussakis along with the Head of Crime Prevention Unit of the region of Emilia Romagna of Italy and the Deputy in charge of Security of the City of Le Havre of France had the opportunity to discuss and share their knowledge and experience with experts in urban security, who attended the conference.<\/p>\n

During the fruitful interaction that ensued, it was commonly accepted that the local organised networks involved in drug trafficking, migrant smuggling, money laundering, property crimes and other illicit activities, with cross-border dimensions, is a phenomenon impacting the safety and financial activity of European societies. As best practices for the countering of this multi-factorial problem were pointed out the prevention and enforcement, by implementing modern police methods and technological solutions, as well as the launch of initiatives enhancing multi-stakeholder cooperation.<\/p>\n

As concerns the International Conference, \u039a\u0395\u039c\u0395\u0391, being a partner in the H2020 EU Project IcARUS (Innovative AppRoaches to Urban Security)<\/a><\/span> was the co-organiser, along with the Project\u2019s coordinator, EFUS (European Forum for Urban Security<\/a>)<\/span> that connects 250 local administrative authorities, of the event titled \u00ab35 years of local urban security policies – which tools and methods best respond to tomorrow\u2019s challenges?\u00bb hosted by the city of Riga on 12 and 13 of May, 2022.<\/p>\n

After the Mayor of the City of Liege and President of EFUS Willy DeMeyer\u2019s opening speech, participants had the opportunity to attend the main discussion panel titled \u00ab30 years \u03bff experience and innovation in urban security policies\u00bb. Following the panel, parallel sessions pertinent to the \u00abExperimental session on design thinking: creative problem-solving processes\u00bb and on \u00abHow to strengthen resilience among youth?\u00bb ensued.<\/p>\n

During the second day of the Conference, parallel panels on \u00abHow to design inclusive and safe public spaces?\u00bb, \u00abTackling organised crime at the local level\u00bb and \u00abTechnology and urban security: challenges and opportunities\u00bb presented ample opportunity for discussion. The second day was concluded with an additional panel and a workshop, the former pertaining to the topic of \u00abChallenges of prevention in a changing landscape of radicalization leading to violent extremism\u00bb, and the latter to a \u00abPractical experiential session on design thinking: how to foster multi-stakeholder cooperation?\u00bb.<\/p>\n
